351. To bat a thousand

뭔가가 매우 성공적이거나 대흥행 기록을 거둘때 ‘히트치다’고 합니다. 위 표현도 야구 선수가 천여 개의 홈런을 기록하듯 대성공이란 의미입니다.

A:Do you have any idea who’s gonna win the employee of the year this time?
B:No, who is it?
A:It’s Greg again. You know, he’s won the award three years in a row.
B:Really? What kind of guy is Greg?
A:I’ve gotta figure out what his secret is. Every client he approaches wants to sign a contract with him. He’s really batting a thousand.
B:Wow…. There must be a secret. Please let me know if you figure it out.

A:올해 우수 직원 상을 이번에 누가 타는지 알아?
B:아니, 누군데?
A:또 그렉이야. 알다시피 삼 년째 연속으로 상을 타는 거야.
B:정말? 도대체 어떤 사람이야?
A:비결이 뭔지 알아내야겠어, 그가 접근하는 고객은 다 그와 계약을 한다니까. 정말 대성공이야.
B:와, 분명히 비결이 있겠네. 뭔지 알아내면 나도 알려줘.

Right off the bat:즉시, 지체하지 않고 (=immediately)
(예)I’m ready enough to answer all the questions right off the bat. (난 모든 질문에 즉시 대답할 수 있도록 준비가 되어있다.)
Off one’s own bat:혼자서, 다른 사람의 도움 없이
(예)I came up with this plan entirely off my own bat. (난 이 계획을 다른 사람의 도움 없이 혼자 세웠다.)
