My chances are slim.
한 미국인 고등학생에게 What are your chances of getting into an Ivy League college?(동부의 일류 대학에 진학할 가망이 있느냐?)라고 물어 보았더니 My chances are slim (가능성이 희박합니다)이라고 했다 이 경우 chances는 「가능성」이라는 뜻이며 Ivy League는 하버드.예일.프린스턴등의 미국동부의 명문 대학을 가리키는데 학교가 오래되어 건물이 Ivy(담쟁이 덩굴)로 덮여 있는 것에서 유래되었다.「가능성이 많다」는 Chances are good,「가능성이 좀 있다」고 할 때는 Chances are fair이며 Chances are fifty fifty는「가능성이 반반이다」가 된다.
A:Are you getting the promotion you hoped for this year? B:It seemsthat my chances are slim.
A:That's too bad.Why not? B:We still have limited advancement opportunities in this company.
A:When do you think you'll get promoted,then? B:Well,only time willtell.
A:올해 당신이 바라던 승진이 되나요? B:가망이 없을 것 같아요. A:참 안됐군요.왜죠? B:아직도 내가 다니는 회사는승진 기회가 적어요.
A:그럼 언제 승진할 것 같아요? B:글쎄요.때가 되면 되겠죠.
