A:그애의 성적을 믿을 수가 없구려.전부 F학점이라니? B:부전자전 아니겠어요? A:Frank는 아주 익살스럽게 생겼어요. B:그 아버지에 그 아들이에요.
A:Michael은 노래를 잘 불러요.
B:부전자전인가봐요.
여기서「like」는「(외관,내용 따위가)~을 닮은,유사한(resembling,similar to)」의 의미로 쓰였다.그러므로「Like father,like son.」은 우리가 흔히 쓰는「부전자전」과 비슷한 표현이라 할 수 있다.
「Like father,like son.」은 예전에 배운 표현「take after~」(~을 닮다)와 연관지어 생각할 수 있다. 첫번째 대화에서는 「He takes after you」(그애는 당신을 닮았잖아요),두번째 대화에서는「Frank takes after his father」(Frank는 그의 아버지를 닮았어요)라고 바꾸어 말할 수 있다.
