대인 관계에서 상대방에게 좋은 인상을 주는 것은 아주 중요하다. “좋은 인상을 주려고 하다”에 해당하는 적절한 표현에“put one's best foot forward.”가 있다.
가령“Put your best foot forward at the job interview.”하면 “취업 면접에서 좋은 인상을 주려고 해봐.”라는 뜻이며,“Be sure to putyour best foot forward wh en you meet the boss.”하면“사장님 만나면 좋은 인상 주려고해봐”라는 뜻이다.
