서로 다투거나 싸워 토라지는 경우가 있다.
이럴 때 “우리는 서로 말을 하지 않아요” 라고 하는데 영어로는 “We're not on speaking terms with each other.” 라고 한다.
가령 “We're not on speaking terms with each other after our fight last night.” 하면 “지난밤에 싸운 후로 우리는 말을 하지 않는다.” 가 되며, “We're not on speaking terms with each other. I refuse to speak to him.” 하면 “우리는 서로 말을 하지 않아요. 그와 말하지 않을 거예요.” 가 된다.
“We're not on speaking terms with each other.” 와 비슷한 표현에 “We're not speaking to each other.” “We're ignoring each other.” 등이 있다.
반대로 “We're on good terms.” 하면 “우리는 사이가 좋다.” 라는 뜻이다.
A: Could you ask Frank if I could borrow some cash?
B: Why don't you ask him yourself?
A: Did you two have a fight or something?
B: We're not on speaking terms with each other.
A: Gee, that sounds serious.B: I refuse to speak to him.
A: 프랭크에게 현금을 좀 빌릴 수 있는지 물어봐 줄래?
B: 직접 부탁하지 그러니?
A: 둘이 싸우기라도 했니?
B: 우리는 서로 말하지 않아.
A: 저런, 심각하게 들리는구나.
B: 그와 말하지 않겠어.
