어느 사회에서나 힘의 상징(symbolic)인 것처럼 문신 글씨를 몸에 새기고(inscription)갖가지 비행(delinquency)에 연루되는 청소년들이 큰 문제다. In any society are teenagers who have their bodies tattooed, as if those inscriptions were symbolic of their power, and get involved in various kinds of delinquencies.
Delinquency는 (청소년의) 비행, 의무불이행, 직무 태만 등을 말한다. delinquency의 정의는 ‘minor crime especially that which is committed by young people.’ ‘neglect of one?s duty’ 의무를 불이행했을 때도 쓴다. ?His research sought to uncover social causes of crime and delinquency.? 그의 연구가 밝혀낸 것은 청소년 범죄와 비행의 사회적 원인이었다. That area has a high rate of juvenile delinquency는 소년 범죄율이 높은 지역을 말한다. 동의어 wrongdoing은 중대한 잘못, 범법행위 등을 말한다. ‘We have found no evidence of wrongdoing by the young fraud.? 우리는 어떤 잘못된 증거를 그 어린 사기꾼에게서 찾지 못했다.
Inscription은 묘비의 비명이나 비문으로 ‘새겨진 글씨’를 뜻한다. ‘The gravestone carried the inscription?, ‘Beloved Wife and Mother.’ 묘비명에는 사랑하는 아내이자 어머니였다고 새겨져 있었다. inscription의 동의어로 engraving과 etching이 있다. Symbolic은 ‘상징적인’이란 뜻의 형용사다. 정의는 ‘Serving as a symbol’, ‘Involving the use of symbols or symbolism’이다. ‘The exchange of rings during the wedding ceremony is symbolic of endless love.? 반지를 주고받는 것을 결혼식 때 하는 것은 영원한 사랑의 상징이라는 뜻이다. 마지막 예문으로 ?My highschool English teacher tried to teach me to see the symbolic meaning behind an author?s descriptive passages.? 고교 선생님이 작가의 묘사에 숨겨진 행간(숨은 뜻)을 봐야 한다고 가르쳐주셨다. Symbolic 의 동의어로 emblematic이 있다.
