<영어하루한마디>제시간에 와주세요

Be on time! A:Gosh! My car won't start.
B:Then, what shall we do? We are going to be late for the wedding ceremony.
A:Why don't you take a taxi and go ahead.
I'll catch up with you later.
B:OK, see you there! Be on time! A:아니,이런.내 차가 시동이 안 걸리네.
B:그럼 어떡하지? 결혼식에 늦겠는 걸.
A:너 먼저 택시타고 가는 게 어때? 난 나중에 뒤따라 갈게. B:좋아,거기서 보자.제 시간에 와야해! 「약속시간에 잘 맞춰왔다」고 할 때 『You have come at the scheduled time.』이라고 하면 문법상 맞을지는 몰라도영어는 아니다.
실제회화에서는 「시간(위에)에(와)있다」는 식으로 표현해 「You are on time.」이라 한다.
「take a taxi」(택시를 잡다),「catch up with」(뒤따라 잡다)등의 표현도 더불어 익혀두는 것이 좋다.
교통체증 때문에 약속시간을 지키지 못하는 일이 비일비재한 요즘이지만 약속시간만은 「Be on time」해야 하지 않을지….
