[TONG] 한영외고 외국인 교사 “청소년 집회 참여는 아주 바람직”

2016년 11월, 시민들의 손에 들린 촛불이 서울 청계천과 광화문 일대를 밝히고 있다. 2008년 미국산 쇠고기 수입 반대 집회 때에도 같은 자리였다. 외신에서도 광화문광장과 그 인근 도로는 평화 집회의 장소로 알려졌다.

광화문광장은 서울 종로구 광화문에서 세종로 사거리와 청계광장으로 이어지는 세종로 중간에 조성됐다. 교통을 통제하면 너비 100m까지 활용할 수 있다. 위치상 서울의 중심지이자 공간 활용에 있어서도 뛰어나기 때문에 대규모 행사 장소로 적합하다.

그렇다면 집회가 있는 날 그 공간에 함께 있던 외국인은 어떤 생각을 가지게 됐을까. 지난 12일 촛불 집회에 참여한 한영외고 국제어학부 앨리샤 자네이루(Alecia Janeiro) 교사에게 현장에서 느낀점을 물었다.

- 외국인의 관점에서 한국인에게 청계천과 광화문은 어떤 의미를 지닌 것 같은가요? 그리고 왜 대규모 시위는 이 일대에서 주로 일어난다고 생각하나요?
"광화문과 그 앞에 쭉 펼쳐진 거리 전체가 한국의 역사를 상징하는 것 같아요. 더 자세히 말하자면, 시청·광화문·청계천은 서울의 옛모습과 전통을 잘 나타내주는 장소라고 생각합니다. 또 한국의 발전한 모습을 가장 잘 보여주는 곳인 것 같아요. 서울은 발전한 대도시이고, 마땅히 시위를 할 장소가 없는 것 같아요. 하지만 청계천과 광화문은 거리의 폭도 넓고 시청부터 명동까지 쭉 이어져서 시위에 적합한 장소죠."

"Guanghwa-mun and the entire stretch of the street symbolizes the history of Korea. To be exact, City hall, Guanghwa-mun, and Chunggaechun seem to represent older part of Seoul, and the traditions of Korea. They also showcase the Korea’s development. And in my perspective, Seoul is a huge city and there are no good geographical sights for protests, but Chunggaechun and Gwanghwamun are flat ares which are stretched all the way from the city hall to Myung-Dong, so it’s suitable places for the protests."

- 요즘 한국 정부와 관련해 어떤 일들이 벌어지고 있는지 자세히 아시나요? 아니면 한국의 독특한 문화를 체험해 보려고 시위에 참석하셨나요?
"지금 한국에서 벌어지고 있는 상황에 대해서 정확히 알아요. 저는 대학에서 역사학을 전공했고, 근대사와 연관이 있는 정치적 이슈에 관심이 많은데요. 한국의 근대사 역시 흥미롭다는 걸 알게 됐죠. 시위가 벌어질 때 영문도 모르고 온 관광객들이 '왜 사람들이 이렇게 화가 났나요?'라고 궁금해하더라고요. 그래서 저는 한국인들이 왜 촛불을 들고 있는지 의아해하는 여러 관광객에게 배경 설명을 해줬습니다."

"I exactly know what’s going on around Korea right now. I have majored in history department, and since I’m interested in political issues which is rooted in modern history, I found out that Korea modern history is fascinating. During the protests, there were many tourists who actually had no idea what was going around in Korea, and many of them were asking “why are people so mad?” during the protests. So I explained to several other foreigners who were wondering why the crowds were all holding candles."

- 눈에 띄는 시위자들이 있었나요?
"하하. '예수만이 답입니다'라고 계속 외치는 사람이 제가 보기에 제일 이상했어요. 저는 대체 예수랑 ‘최순실 게이트’가 무슨 상관이 있는지 잘 모르겠어요."

Oh… haha there were weirdest protesters who were shouting “Jesus is the only answer.” and I don’t really get the connection between the ‘jesus’ and ‘Choi Sun Sill gate’.

-많은 시위 참가자 중, 갓난아이를 유모차에 태워서 다니는 이들도 있었어요. 이 현상에 대해선 어떻게 생각하시나요?
"이런 유형의 시위는 실제로 역사적이고 중대한 시위라고 생각해요. 하지만 제가 아이의 부모였다면 최소한 초등학생에도 안 들어간 아이들은 데려오지 않았을 것 같아요. 아기를 데리고 오기엔 너무 위험하니까요. (시위에 참석한 부모님들을 비하하는 발언은 아닙니다. 단지 제 의견이에요.) 그럼에도 불구하고 위험을 감수하고도 아이와 함께 나오는 모습들이 이번 평화 시위를 유지하는 데 상당히 큰 몫을 했다고 생각합니다. 이번 시위엔 많은 청소년들도 참여했는데, 아주 바람직하다고 생각해요. 시위를 통해 민주주의가 뭔지 알게 되고, 표현의 자유가 우리 사회에 얼마나 중요한지 배울 수 있기 때문에 이러한 참여는 학생들에게 많은 도움이 된다고 생각합니다."

"This type of protests were actually a historical protests and an important one. But if I were the parents, I wouldn’t have brought the kids to the protest unless the baby were at least in the elementary school. Bringing infants are too much, and too risky. However, with all those risks, bringing kids may have been the reminder for the people to keep the protest peaceful until the end. There were also a lot of teenagers who were attending the protest, and I totally understand when the teenagers attend to these kind of events. Actually it is important for them to attend the protests since we can learn and find out more about what democracy is, and how much the ‘freedom of speech’ is crucial to the society."

- 시위에서 무엇을 하셨나요?
"저는 주로 사진을 찍었어요. 아시다시피, 저는 한국 시민이 아니고, 박근혜 대통령은 저의 실질적인 대통령이 아닙니다. 그러나 저는 지금 한국에 살고 있고 사진 찍기가 취미라서 집회에 갔습니다. 또 제가 근무하는 한영외고 학생들이 과제에 치여 시위에 참석하기 어려울 것 같아서 제가 찍은 사진으로나마 현장의 분위기를 보여주고 싶었습니다. 문서화해서 학교 아이들과 토의를 해볼 수 있을 것 같아서요."

"I was taking photos. As you know, I’m not a Korean citizen, so Park Guen Hae is not practically my president. But I do live in Korea, and since photography is my hobby, I went to the protest. Also Hanyoung Foreign Language High school students can’t often go due to a lot of assignments. So I wanted to share at least with the photos I took, and I can also document it to pass out to the students for class discussions."

- 요즘 미국에서도 정치 이슈에 대해 논란이 있는데요. 이러한 이슈를 대하는 미국인과 한국인의 차이점이 있을까요?
"현재 미국인들은 토의하고, 각자의 의견을 트위터와 페이스북 등 SNS에서 나누고 있습니다. 전국에서 소규모 시위도 있었지만, 사회 전체가 연합해 한 데 모인 집회는 아직 일어나지 않았다는 것이 한국과 다른 점이에요. 미국은 한 곳에 모이기엔 너무 넓어서 그런 것 같습니다."

"Currently Americans are discussing, and posting their own opinions through the SNS such as Twitter, and facebook. There were also some small protests all around the country, but unlike Korea, the protests aren’t really happening in one place, where the whole society comes out together and unite as one. I guess America as a continent is too big for doing that."
