Dear people of Afghanistan,
We are the families of twenty-one South Koreans who were held hostage by Taliban during medical relief work in Afghanistan.
Please help us. Please help us that we they we come back to us safely.
Please have mercy on us who could do nothing but to plea with our tears. Please send our children home.
They went to Afghanistan with the burden in their heart, to pay back the debt of love that Korea received unconditionally from numerous countries during war 50 years ago. They are our sons and daughters. Each one of these twenty-one people under custody of Taliban is a precious child to us.
These children went to act on their love beyond race, religion and borders.
Tragic war that torn Korea into pieces is not forgotten. Instead, it is still engraved in our hearts. This is why Koreans are ready to go wherever the people under suffering maybe.
Koreans understand the pains Afghanistan people are experiencing.
Because we Koreans owe great love to the world, if we could pay back the debt of love, we will go wherever it may be. Please remember that they went to Afghanistan not just out of religious zeal and selfishness.
Whenever we think of deadly pain and terror these precious ones would be experiencing now, our hearts broke.
Dear people of Afghanistan, July 19th, the day our children held in custody of Taliban, do you know what happened in Afghanistan 3 years ago on that very day?
July 19th, 2004 was the day the Ibn Sina Hospital opened in Kabul. How sad is this. The first day that Korean people started medical works in Afghanistan, 3 years later that very day become the day Korean medical team held hostage. We families grieve at this reality.
Ibn Sina Hospital hired 3,800 Afghan and trained them in Korea. Maybe the bus you rode today could be one of the 43 buses that Korean supported in January 2005. Did you know that Korean were also there helping construction of IT center at Kabul University of Technology , and satellite internet system?
During Korean War, we experienced the similar situation as Afghanistan today.
Thanks to people like those twenty-one men and women in hostage who helped Korea from all over the world, we are now who we are. They built hospitals and schools to give hope to the hopeless.
We Koreans will not forget that we owe our today to people who helped us like those men and women.
Please know that Korean, who received unconditional love, cry out for the suffering that people of Afghanistan go through, today.
We believe in the near future, children of Afghanistan will also act on love in other needy countries like these twenty-one Korean.
Please send our children so that we can meet them alive. They shared the sorrows of Afghanistan people and spoke love. Only now we understand fully, the compassion our children had in their heart.
We believe these children will become strong advocates of Afghan when they return to Korea.
Because they witnessed the suffering in you, the very pain their Korean parents, grandparents suffered.
Korean people still remembers the sadness of war. Korean can understand the suffering of the people of Afghanistan. In that respect, we are the one and only country that is in unique position to be capable of understanding Afghanistan than any other western countries.
Please remember that Korea is the friend that could give you hope and courage that no other country can give. We Koreans are still friend of Afghanistan.
When our children come back home alive, we will help our children to become seeds that bloom flower of hope in Afghanistan and work for Afghanistan's better tomorrow.
Please. We urge you again. Please send our children home. If they could not come back, there would be no one who could speak on behalf of the suffering people of Afghanistan.
Dear people of Afghanistan, though we speak different languages, we believe our heart will speak to your heart. We still believe Korea is still Afghanistan's friend and hope.
Please send our twenty-one children home that we may hug them once again.

아프가니스탄 국민 여러분,
저희들은 아프가니스탄에서 의료봉사 활동을 하다가
지금 탈레반에 억류된 21명의 한국인 가족들입니다.
이렇게 눈물로 호소하는 것 말고는 아무 것도 할 수 없는
이 가족들을 불쌍히 여기셔서 제발..
우리 아이들을 가족들 품으로 돌려보내 주십시오.
지금 탈레반에 아직까지 억류되어 있는 우리 아들...우리 딸.... 이 21명은
50년 전 한국전쟁으로 배고팠던 시절에
전 세계 사람들에게 대가 없이 받았던 그 사랑의 빚을 대신 갚겠다고....
아프가니스탄 국민들의 아픔을 함께 나누겠다고 그곳에 간,
저희에겐 너무나도 소중한 가족입니다.
이 아이들은 민족, 종교, 국가... 이 모든 것을 초월해 그 사랑을 실천하러 간 아이들입니다.
한국인들은 전쟁의 아픔을 품고 사는 민족이기에...
분쟁과 기근, 전쟁 폐허로 고통 받고 있는 곳이라면 그 어디든지 달려갈 수 있습니다.
우리는 지금 아프가니스탄 국민들이 겪고 있는 아픔을 공감합니다.
남의 일이 아니기 때문에,
한국인들은 전 세계인의 사랑에 빚진 자들이기 때문에.
그 빚을 갚을 수 있는 곳이라면 어디든지 갈 수 있습니다.
이는 결코 종교적인 이기심만으로 아프가니스탄을 간 것이 아니라는 것을
반드시 기억해 주십시오.
이런 숭고한 생명들이 죽음의 문턱에 서서 고통을 받고 있다는 것만 생각하면...
이 가족들은 억장이 무너지는 고통에 가슴이 찢어집니다.

우리 아이들이 탈레반에 억류된 7월19일.
3년 전 그 날에 아프가니스탄에서 어떤 일이 있었는지 기억하십니까?
2004년 7월 19일은 수도 카불에 ‘이브니 시나’ 병원이 개원한 날이었다고 합니다.
한국에서 아프가니스탄 보건의료 분야 지원의 첫 사업을 시작한 그 날이...
아프가니스탄 국민들을 위해 자비를 들여 보건의료 봉사를 간 우리 아이들이
억류된 날이 되어 버렸으니 이 얼마나 안타까운 일입니까!
이런 현실에 애통해하며 이 가족들은 가슴을 치며 눈물을 흘립니다.
이 병원에서 3천8백 명의 현지인을 고용해 병원 의료진을 한국으로 초청해 교육도 시켰다고 합니다. 지금 여러분이 타고 다니는 버스가 2005년 1월에 한국에서 지원한 43대의 버스 중, 1대 일수도 있습니다. 카불공대에 IT센터 건립도, 위성 인터넷 설치도 한국인들이 함께 도왔다는 것을 알고 계십니까?
우리도 한국전쟁 당시에 아프가니스탄 국민과 같은 처지였습니다.
지금 억류되어 있는 21명의 젊은이들과 같은 마음을 품고 한국을 도운
세계 각지의 이름 모를 사람들이 있었기에 지금의 한국이 있을 수 있었습니다.
그들은 한국인들을 위해 병원도 세워줬고, 배고픈 아이들에게 미래를 꿈꿀 수 있게
학교도 지어주고 교육도 시켜주었다고 합니다.
아프가니스탄에 억류된 21명의 한국인들과 같은 사람들이 있었기에
지금의 한국이 있을 수 있었다는 것을 한국인들은 잊지 않고 있습니다.
이런 무조건의 사랑을 받았던 한국인의 마음 속에는
지금 아프가니스탄 국민들이 겪고 있는 아픔에
애통해하는 마음이 있다는 것을 꼭 알아주시기 바랍니다.
그리고 아프가니스탄 국민들의 아이들도 가까운 미래에는
전쟁으로 힘들어하는 세계 어딘가에 가서
지금 우리 아이들 21명이 했던 나눔을 실천할 것이라 믿습니다.
우리 아이들이 제발 살아서 가족들과 만날 수 있도록 돌려보내 주십시오.
이 아이들은 아프가니스탄 국민들과 아픔을 함께 나누었고, 사랑을 전하기에 애썼습니다.
그리고 이 아이들이 품었던 긍휼의 마음을 이제야 깨닫게 된,
이 힘없는 가족들은 우리 자식들에게 고개를 숙입니다.
그들이 한국으로 돌아온다면 그 누구보다 더
여러분의 어려움과 지금 처해진 고통의 상황을 전 세계에 호소해 줄 것이라 믿습니다.
왜냐하면 이 아이들의 부모가, 할아버지.. 할머니가 전쟁으로 겪었던 고통을,
지금 당신들이 똑같이 겪고 있다는 것을 눈으로 직접 확인한 사람들이기 때문입니다.
전쟁의 아픔을 품고 사는 한국인들은
아프가니스탄 국민의 마음을 진실로 공감하며 아픔을 나눌 수 있습니다.
이런 국가와 민족은 한국이 유일하다는 것을 기억해 주시길 바랍니다.
한국은 서방 국가가 줄 수 없는 희망과 용기를 여러분에게 드릴 수 있는 친구입니다.
그리고 아직까지도 한국인들은 아프가니스탄 국민들과 친구입니다.
지금 억류되어 있는 아이들이 살아 돌아온다면,
이들이 씨앗이 되어 아프가니스탄에 희망의 꽃이 자라게 하고,
보다 나은 현실에서 살아갈 수 있도록 돕겠습니다.
우리 아이들을 제발, 제발 돌려보내 주십시오.
이대로 아이들이 살아 돌아올 수 없다면,
아프가니스탄 국민들의 뼈아픈 고통을 공감적으로 이해해
세계에 알려줄 수 있는 사람이 없습니다.
아프가니스탄 국민 여러분,
언어는 통하지 않아도 마음은 통할 것이라고 믿습니다.
아직까지 한국은 아프간의 희망, 아프간의 친구라고 믿고 있습니다.
21명의 우리 자식, 형제들을 가족들 품으로 돌려보내 주십시오!
