말이나 글의 앞뒤가 맞지 않을때“말이 안 된다.”고 할 수 있는데 이런 경우“It doesn't make sense.”라고 한다.가령“It doesn't make sense to do it again.”하면“그것을 다시 한다는 건 말도 안돼.”가 되며,“It doesn't make sense to carry two umbrellas.”하면“우산을 두 개씩 갖고 다니는 건 말도 안된다.”가 된다.“It doesn't make sense.”와 비슷한 표현에“It isn't reasonable[logical].”“It doesn't seem right.”등이 있다.

A:Did you finish transcribing what you heard on the tape ?

B:I'm working on it. It's very hard to do.

A:May I look at what you did ?

B:I just took down scattered parts of it. I can't understand what I took down.

A:It doesn't make sense.

B:I know. I'll have to redo it.

A:테이프에서 들은 걸 다 받아 적었어요?

B:작업중입니다.하기가 아주 어려워요.

A:한 걸 좀 볼까요?

B:부분적으로 받아썼는데 저도 이해할 수가 없어요.

A:말이 안 되는군요.

B:알고 있어요.다시 해야 되겠습니다.
