<영어하루한마디>601. 자리를 양보하는게 어때?

전철이나 버스등에서 상대방에게 자리를 양보하는 경우가 있는데 영어로는'make room for'라고 한다.따라서“He made room for a physically handicapped man.”이라고 하면“그는 지체부자유자에게 자리를 양보했다.”가 되며,“Why don't you makeroom for him?”하면“자리를 양보하시는게 어때요?”라는 뜻이다.“Why don't you make room for him?”과 비슷한 표현에“Why don't you givehim your seat?”이 있다.

A:Look! There's an old man getting on the subway

B:Why don't you make room for him?

A:Well, it's been quite a while since I last had a seat in this crowded subway.

B:Don't you think he's tired?

A:I guess you're right.

B:You did the right thing.

A:가만! 연세 많은 노인께서 전철에 오르고 있어.

B:자리 양보하는게 어때?

A:이런 혼잡한 전철에서 자리에 앉아 본 지가 꽤 오래됐는데.

B:저분이 피곤하다고 생각되지 않니?

A:네 말이 맞아.

B:잘 했어.
