<영어하루한마디>그는 실수했다.

He dropped the ball.
스포츠에서 「실수로 볼을 놓치다」라고 할때 「drop theball」이라고 한다.
그런데 이 뜻외에 비유적인 의미로 「실수하다(make a blunder)」라고 할 때도 「drop the ball」을 쓴다.『He dropped the ball when he worked on the account.』라고 하면 『그는 그 계정을 처리할 때 실수했다.』는 뜻이고 『The boss can't trust him to do the job right.
He's always dropping the ball.』하면『사장님이 그를 믿을 리 없다.그는 항상 실수를 한다.』는 뜻이다.『He dropped the ball.』과 비슷한 표현에『He goofed.』『He made a mistake.』 『He fouled up.』등이 있다.
