<영어하루한마디>...하기 위해 테스트를 받았다

I tried out for… 「연극.스포츠 팀 등의 자리를놓고 적합한지 테스트를 받다」라고 할 때 쓸 수 있는 관용어에「try out」이 있다.가령 『그녀는 성가대에 들어가려고 테스트를 받았다.』라고 하려면 『She tried out forthe choir .』 하면 되고 『나는 축구팀에 들어가기 위해 테스트를 받았다.』고 하려면 『I tried out forthe soccer team.』하면 된다.『I tried out for the soccer team.』과 비슷한 표현에 『I attempte d to make the soccer team.』『I competed for a spot on the soccer team.』 등이 있다.
A:Are you on any school teams this year? B:I tried out for the soccer team but I was cut.
A:Too bad.
Competition must've been fierce.
B:I'll say.
They only chose ten players out of two hundred.
A:Really? B:I wish I'd joined thechess club.
A:올해 무슨 학교 팀에라도 들었나요? B:축구팀에 들어가기위해 테스트를 받았지만 탈락했어요.
A:참 안됐군요.경쟁이 치열했던 모양이지요? B:그랬어요.2백명중 겨우 10명만 뽑았어요.
A:정말? B:체스 클럽에 들었더라면 좋을 텐데.
