suck up은 '흡수하다, 빨아들이다'는 말입니다. 여기서 사람에게 찰싹 붙어서 아첨하고 잘 보이려고 한다는 의미가 파생됩니다.

B:Yes, and I also heard that she took him out to lunch every day last week.
A:Is she sucking up to him for a raise or what?
B:Next thing you know she'll marry the guy.
A:But he's married already.

(예)I don't know how I got sucked into going on this ski trip. I can't ski!(나는 스키도 못타는데 어떻게 해서 이 스키 여행을 가게 됐는지 모르겠다.)
