'shot'은 총이나 대포 등의 발사를 가리킵니다. 멀리서 쏘는 'long shot'은 자연히 목표물을 맞히기 어려우므로 상징적으로 '힘든 시도'를 가리킵니다.

B:Make what?

A:What do you think? I'm talking about the project we're working on.

B:It'll be tough, but you know, we've been making a lot of efforts at winning it.

A:I know but we're fighting against such big competitors.
