보통 때와 다른 일이있어 보이는 상대방에게 "무슨 일이 있나요?" 라고 하려면 "What's the occasion?" 이라고 한다.
예를 들어 "이 축하행사는 무슨 일 때문입니까?" 는 "What's the occasion for this celebration?" 이라고 하면 되고 "그 예복을 입으니 멋있군요. 무슨 일이 있나요?" 는 "You look great in that tuxedo. What's the occasion?" 이라고 한다.
"What's the occasion." 과 비슷한 표현은 "What's the big event?" "What's going on?" "What's happening?" 등이 있다.
A:Hello, Eddie. This is Tae - soo.
B:Hi, Tae - soo. What's up?
A:Would you like to go on a picnic to a mountain this Friday?
B:But you're always busy during the week. What's the occasion.
A:It is Korea's Constitution Day. I have the day off.
B:Sure. A picnic is a great way to celebrate a summer holiday.

A:이번 금요일에 산으로 놀러가지 않을래?
