대화중 이쪽에서 말할 기회도 주지 않고 끊임없이 지껄이는 사람에 대해“귀가 따갑도록 말을 한다.”“한없이 지껄인다.”고 할 수 있는데 영어로는.talk one's ears off'로표현한다.가령“Once he talks to m e,he talks my ears off.”하면“그는 내게 말을 한번 하면귀가 따갑도록 얘기한다.”는 뜻이고,“He talks my ears off, so I hate talking with him.”하면“그는 내 귀가 따갑도록 얘기하므로 그와 말하기 싫다.”는 뜻이다.비슷한 표현에“He talks his head off.”“He never knows when to shut up.”“He's a chatterbox.”“He's got a big mouth.
