우리가 자주 사용하는 납작한 냄비를 'pan'이라고 하죠. 저울 등에 달린 납작한 접시나 납작한 모양의 뼈 등을 가리킬 때도 씁니다. 이밖에 'pan'은 '혹평하다'란 의미로도 빈번히 사용됩니다.

B:Not yet. Anything worth reading?
A:It has a review of the play that Andrew talked about yesterday.
B:Is the review okay? Andrew obviously seemed to enjoy the play.
A:You know how critics are, don't you? They really gave it a pan. It was brutal.
B:Yeah, that's the critics. They always like to rake something over the coals.
A:오늘 신문 읽었어?
B:아직 못 봤는데. 무슨 읽을 만한 기사라도 났어?
A:앤드루가 어제 얘기했던 그 연극에 대한 평이 실렸더라고.
B:좋은 내용이야? 앤드루는 꽤 만족했던 것 같던데.
A:비평가들이란…. 알잖아? 아주 혹평을 해놓았어. 정말 심하더라.
B:맞아. 비평가들은 그래. 언제나 심하게 혹평하는 걸 좋아한다니까.
