중앙일보 편집국에는 “Don't settle for mediocrity.”라는 표어가 붙어 있는데 우리말로 하면“적당히 안주하지 마세요.”라는 의미다.
여기서'settle for'는'~으로 만족하다''~로 참다'는 뜻으로,가령“Don't settle for mediocrity. There are more difficult things facing us.”하면“적당히 안주하지 마세요.직면한 더 어려운 일들이 있습니다.”가 된다.
“Don't settle for mediocrity.”와 비슷한 표현으로 “Don't settle for second best.(차선에 만족하지 마라.)” “Don't be complacent.”“Don't let up.(긴장을 풀지 마라.)” “Aim high.(목표를 높게 잡아라.)”등이 있다.
