Can I pay for this in installments? 물건값을 나눠 내려고 할 때 『할부로 할 수 있습니까?』라고 말할 수 있는데 적절한 표현에 『Can I pay forthis in installments?』가 있다.여기서 「installment」는 「분할물의 1회분」「할부금」이 라는 뜻으로 『I've been paying for the laptopcomputer in installments.』라고 하면 『나는 노트북 컴퓨터 값을 할부로 내고 있다.』는 뜻이다.여기서 「in installments」대신「by in stallment」나「on an installment plan」을 써도 같은뜻이 된다.반대로 「일시불로」라고 할 때는 「in a lumpsum」을 쓰는데 가령 『나는 텔레비전 수상기 값을 일시불로 냈다.』고 하려면 『I paid f or the television in a lump sum.』이라고 하면 된다.
