위작 논란

“세상에 널리 퍼져 있는 나의 작품 중에는 가짜가 더 많다.”

중국의 인민예술가 제백석(齊白石·1864~1957)이 인장으로 새겨 자신의 작품에 날인한 문구다. 그는 또 “눈이 있다면 마땅히 작품의 진위를 알아야 한다”는 인장을 새겨 찍기도 했다. 이뿐이 아니다. 그는 평소 자신의 작품을 구입한 사람과는 사진을 찍지 않는다는 원칙을 지켰다. 구매자가 외국에서 전시회를 열어 자신의 위작을 팔 경우 그 신용도를 높이는 데 이용되는 것을 경계한 탓이다. 이처럼 조심한 것은 동양화의 경우 위작이 특히 많기 때문이다. 그 배경에는 그림을 배우는 방법이 베끼기에서 시작한다는 전통이 자리잡고 있다. 원본 위에 얇은 종이를 놓고 그대로 베끼는 것을 모사(模寫), 원본을 눈으로 보고 그대로 그리는 것을 임사(臨寫)라고 한다. 임모(臨模)를 기본으로 하다 보니 숙달되기 마련이고, 재능이 뛰어난 작가는 원작과 구별하기 힘든 작품을 그릴 수 있게 된다. 대가의 경우 당대에 이미 임모본이나 위조품이 풍부하게 만들어진다. 여기에 후대에 돈을 노리고 만든 위작까지 가세하면 가짜의 숫자는 천문학적으로 늘어난다.

중국 상하이박물관의 소장품 80여만 점 중 전문가들의 감정을 거쳐 등급이 매겨진 문화재는 12만 점. 나머지 70여만 점은 진위가 의심되거나 위작으로 판정된 이른바 참고품이다. 중국의 대표적 박물관이 이럴진대 군소 박물관이나 민간 소장품은 어떨지 짐작할 수 있다.

임모의 전통을 그대로 이어받은 조선의 그림들은 어떨까. 여기에 경종을 울리는 사례가 있다. 2005년 ‘마지막 개성상인’으로 일컬어지는 원로 기업가 이회림씨가 단원(檀園) 김홍도의 ‘신선도’와 오원(吾園) 장승업의 ‘화조도’ 등 50여 년간 모은 수백억원대의 미술품 8450점을 인천시에 기증한 바 있다. 하지만 감정 결과 절반가량이 진품이 아닌 것으로 판명됐다.

최근엔 서화감정 전문가 이동천씨의 책 『진상-미술품 진위감정의 비밀』이 고미술 감정에 큰 문제를 제기하고 있다. 책은 1000원권 지폐 뒷면에 있는 겸재 정선의 ‘계상정거도’(보물 585호)를 비롯한 조선시대 유명 서화 수백 점이 위작이라는 주장을 담고 있다. 학계와 고미술계는 “상대할 가치가 없다”며 외면하는 분위기다. 하지만 이씨는 중국의 대표적 서화감정가 양런카이(楊仁愷)의 수제자인 데다 중국 유일의 국립미술대학인 베이징 중앙미술학원에서 감정학으로 박사학위를 받은 인물이다. 약력란에 ‘한국 유일의 미술품 감정학자’라고 써놓은 그의 주장과 정면으로 맞붙는 전문가들을 보고 싶다. 위작 논쟁은 미술 시장에 악영향을 미칠 수 있다. 하지만 좋은 약은 입에 쓴 법이다.

A world of fakes

China s People s Artist Qi Baishi (1864-1957) signed his artworks with these words: If we have eyes, we should tell the true value of works of art. This is not all. On principle he refused to be photographed with people who bought his artwork. It was a safeguard against buyers who might use his photo increase the value of imitations at art exhibitions abroad. He was so careful because there are many fakes of Asian works of art. This is because people can copy real works of art. They can make copies of original artworks and pass them off as genuine. As copying becomes easier, talented artists are capable of producing works that are not that different from originals. Many copies and fakes are made of the works of great artists. If we add the fakes generated for money, the number is astronomical.

The works of art at the Shanghai Museum in China are an example. It boasts more than 800,000 paintings, ceramics and bronze ware. But experts have appraised the works and only 120,000 are real cultural treasures. Some 700,000 are either suspected fakes or have been appraised as fakes. If museum collections are like this, imagine what private collections must have. Fakes probably outnumber genuine works of art everywhere, not only at the Shanghai Museum.

What then should we think of Joseon Dynasty drawings and works in that tradition? One case rings a bell. Korean tycoon Lee Hoi-rim donated 8,450 works of art worth tens of billions of won he had collected over 50 years, including drawings of Kim Hong-do and Jang Seung-up, to the city of Incheon. However, results of an appraisal have shown that half of the collection is not genuine.

Recently, Lee Dong-cheon, an expert in appraising drawings, has stirred a debate in the appraisal of ancient works of art in his book The Secret of Appraising Real Works of Art published by Dong-A. The book claims that Jeong-seon s landscape, Gyesangjeonggeodo National Treasure No. 585 printed on the back of 1,000 won bills, and many other famous drawings of the Joseon Dynasty, are forgeries. Academic scholars and dealers in ancient works of art are turning their back on the claims, saying it is not worth considering. However, Lee was the top pupil of China s famous appraiser of ancient works of art, Yang Renkai. He holds a doctorate in appraisal from the Beijing Central Academy of Fine Arts, the only state-run university of fine arts in China. Lee claims to be the only qualified Korean appraiser of ancient works of art. We would like to see experts address this issue. The debate about whether these are fakes may negatively affect the art market here. However, good medicine is meant to be bitter.
