Let's break the ice.
처음 만난 자리에서 서로 서먹서먹할 때는 말을 건네서 분위기를 부드럽게 할 필요가 있다.이 경우 우리말로 『분위기를 살립시다.』라고 할 수 있는데 이와 비슷한 영어표현에 『Let'sbreak the ice.』가 있다.「brea k the ice」는 관용표현으로 『분위기를 누그러뜨리다.』라는 뜻이다.가령『그녀는 매우 외향적이어서 모임에서 먼저 분위기를 리드한다.』고 하려면 『She is so outgoing that she's always breaking the ice at meetings.』라고 하면 되고,『분위기를 누그러뜨리고 서로 친해봅시다.』고 하려면 『Let's break the ice andget to know each other better, shall we?』라고 하면 된다.『L et's break the ice.』와 비슷한 표현에 『Let's get over thepreliminaries.』가 있다.
A:This party is really dull, isn't it? B:Yes.
Hey, I've got an idea! Let's break the ice! A:How do you propose todo that? B:Well, we can play some games that'll involve everybody.
A:That's a good idea.Why don't you call everyone's attention? B:I'll do that.
