369. For God's sake

이익.목적.원인 등 다양한 뜻으로 쓰이는 sake는 아주 간곡한 부탁을 할 때도 활용됩니다. 위 문장과 같이 사용돼 '제발, 부디'란 의미를 나타냅니다.

A:Would you do me a favor? I'm desperate.
B:What is it?
A:I've gotta finish my report before next Monday and I really need a hand.
B:Are you asking me to work this weekend? That's out of the question.
A:Oh, please. I'm begging you. For God's sake, would you?
B:Okay then.

A:내 부탁 좀 들어줄래? 나 절망적이야.
B:뭔데?
A:다음 월요일 전까지 보고서를 끝내야 하는데 도움이 필요해.
B:이번 주말에 나더러 일을 하라는 거야? 말도 안돼.
A:제발. 이렇게 부탁할게. 제발, 응?
B:알았어.

for the sake of ~:~를 위해, ~를 봐서

(예) Can't you compromise just this once, for our sake? (이번 한번만 우리를 위해 양보해 주면 안돼?)

I'll help you this time for your sister's sake. (이번엔 네 여동생을 봐서 도와줄게.)

for old time's sake:옛 정을 생각해서

(예)I allowed him to stay a day for old time's sake. (옛 정을 생각해서 그를 하루 묵게 해주었다.)
