inhibit - zeal - cumbersome

어휘는 무조건 암기하는 것이 아니다. 의미를 이해하고 머릿속에 정리해 언제든지 활용할 줄 알아야 자신만의 어휘가 된다. 연관성이 없어 보이는 3개의 어휘를 하나의 스토리로 연결하면서 재미있게 영어 단어를 즐겨보자.

어떤 일을 억제할(inhibit) 수 없는 열정(zeal)을 갖고 좋아했다 해도 어느 순간 그 일이 성가시고 귀찮아질(cumbersome) 수 있다.
If you don’t allow anyone to inhibit your zeal for English, even long difficult words will not seem cumbersome. (영어에 대한 당신의 열의를 누구도 막지 않는다면, 길고 어려운 단어라도 귀찮지 않을 것이다.)

Cumbersome은 clumsy do to excess weight 또는 slow and complicated and therefore inefficient로 정의할 수 있다. 무겁거나 다루기 힘든, 너무 커서 귀찮다는 어감을 풍기는 형용사다. Cumbersome items는 ‘무거운 물건’을 뜻한다.

Before having all their worksheets on PC, people had the problem of carrying cumbersome copies with them.(모든 서류를 컴퓨터에 저장하기 전, 사람들은 무겁고 불편한 종이서류를 들고 다녀야 했다.) There are many organizations with cumbersome hierarchical structures.(많은 회사들이 복잡하고 번거로운 상하계층 구조를 갖고 있다.) 동의어로는 Awkward, Inefficient등이 있다.

Inhibit은 hinder, restrain or prevent(an action of process)로 어떤 행동이나 과정이 진행되는 것을 막는다는 뜻의 동사다. Frank`s tendency to interrupt constantly seemed to inhibit others from speaking.(프랭크는 끼어드는 버릇이 있어 대화를 못하게 한다.) She seems very inhibited when she is in a large group of people; she`s much more comfortable in a small group.(그녀는 사람들이 많은 틈에서는 소극적이나, 소그룹에선 편안함을 느낀다.) Inhibited person으로 쓰이면 소극적이고 기를 못 펴는 사람을 뜻한다. Inhibit의 동의어로 repress, discourage, obstruct, interdict, forbid가 있다. obstruct는 방해할 때, discourage는 의욕을 꺾어 일을 못하게 만들 때, forbid는 공식적으로 일을 못하게 할 때 각각 쓴다.

Zeal은 열성·열의란 뜻으로 great energy or enthusiasm in pursuit of a cause or an objective로 목표를 이루기 위한 열정과 에너지를 뜻한다. The girl had a zeal for sports that was uncommon for someone her age.(그 소녀는 또래보다 스포츠에 남다른 열정을 갖고 있다.) You must not let your zeal outrun your modesty.(열정이 너무 앞서 겸손을 잊어선 안된다.) passion, ardor, fervor는 모두 같은 상황에 쓸 수 있는 어휘다.
