[영어]경솔하게 말하지 마세요

면접이나 남과 중요한 대화를 나누어야 하는 사람에게 "경솔하게 말하지 마세요. " 라고 하는 경우가 있는데 영어로는 "Don't shoot yourself in the foot." 이라고 한다.

가령 "Don't shoot yourself in the foot during the interview." 하면 "인터뷰 중에 말 실수하지 마라. " 는 뜻이며 "Don't shoot yourself in the foot and she'll go out with you." 하면 "말 실수 안하면 그녀가 데이트에 응할 거야. " 라는 뜻이다.

"Don't shoot yourself in the foot." 과 비슷한 표현에 "Don't put your foot in your mouth." "Don't say the wrong thing." 등이 있다.

참고로 "Don't shoot yourself in the foot." 에는 "행동을 똑바로 해라. " 는 뜻이 있는데 이럴 경우에는 "Don't do something you'll regret." 와 같은 의미다.

A:Tomorrow is my big interview.

B:Sure, I remember.

A:Got any advice?

B:You bet.Don't shoot yourself in the foot.

A:That's what I'm afraid of.

B:You always say the wrong thing at important moments.

A:내일은 중요한 면접이 있어.

B:나도 알아.

A:조언이 있니?

B:물론이지. 말 실수하지 마라.

A:나도 그게 걱정이야.

B:넌 항상 중요한 순간에 엉뚱한 말을 해서 탈이야.
