부부간에 다툰 후 일시적으로 말없이 지내는 경우가 있는데 이런'침묵작전'을'silent treatment'라고 한다.“침묵작전을 쓰다”고 할 때에는'give the silent treatment'로 표현하는데,가령“When I tried to talk to my wife, she gave me the silenttreatment.”라고 하면“아내에게 말을 하려고 했을 때 묵묵부답이었다.”는 뜻이며,“After she put up a fight with me, she gave me the silent treatment.”라고 하면“그녀는 나와 다툰 후 나에게 침묵작전을 썼다.”는 뜻이다.비슷한 표현에“She gaveme the cold shoulder.”가 있다.
