Your sock needs darning.
양말 한쪽이 닳아 구멍이 난 걸 모르고 방으로 들어선 L씨에게 미국인 친구가 『Your sock needs darning.』이라고 했다.이 분은 이 말의 뜻을 몰라 『I'm sorry?』(뭐라고 하셨지요?)라고 묻자 『Your soc k has a hole in it.』이라고 했다.
여기서 「darn」은 「꿰매다,짜깁다」는 뜻으로,가령 『Darn the hole in your sock.』이라고 하면 『양말에 난 구멍을 꿰매세요.』라는 뜻이 된다.『Your sock needs darning.』을 직역하면 『양말 한짝을 꿰 매야겠군요.』이니까 결국 『양말에 구멍이 났군요.』라는 뜻이 된다. 비슷한 표현으로『Your sock needs mending.』이 있으며,유머스럽게 『I can see your big toe peeping out through your sock.』(양말에서 엄지발가락이 삐져나왔군요.)이라고 할 수도 있다.
