I haven' t had the heart to do it. 잘 알고 지내는 미국인친구 톰에게는 그를 짝사랑(one-sided love,unrequited love)하는 여자 친구가 한 명 있다.
톰에게 『Why didn't you have a serious talk with her?』(그녀에게 왜 진지하게 얘기하지않았습니까?)라고 묻자 그는 『I haven't had theheart to do it.』(그렇게 할 용기가 없었어요)이라고 했다.
여기서 「haven't the heart to~」는 「~할 용기가 없다」는 뜻의 관용어다.
비슷한 표현으로 I can't bring myself to do it.또는 I can't quite do it.등이 있다. A:How's your relationship with Jane? B:I'm going to have to break it off.
A:How come? B:She expects too much from me.
A:Why don't you do it,then? B:I haven't had the heart to do it yet.
A:제인과는 어떻게 되어 가니? B:절교해야겠어.
A:왜? B:내게 너무 많은 것을 원한다구.
A:그럼 끊어버리지 그래.
B:아직 그럴 용기가 없었어.
