<영어하루한마디>교대로 운전해요

Let's take turns driving.
어떤 일을 두 사람이 번갈아 할 때 우리말로는 「교대로 ~하다」라고 하는데 적절한 영어표현에「take turns」가 있다. 가령 『부산까지는 머니까 교대로 운전합시다.』고 하려면 『The ride to Pusan is a long one, so let's take turns driving.』이라고 하면되고,『컴퓨터가 하나밖에 없어 우리는 컴퓨터를 교대로 사 용했다.』고 하려면 『We took turns using the computer because there was only one.』이라고 하면 된다.
『Let's take turns driving.』과 비슷한 표현에『Let's drive alternatingly.』『Let's share the task of driving.』등이 있다. A:How long will the trip to Pusan take? B:It's a five-hour drive. A:Really? I didn't know it wouldtake so long.
B:Let's take turns driving.
A:That's a very good idea.
B:Let me take the wheel first.
A:부산까지 얼마나 걸릴까요? B:차로 5시간 걸리는데요.
A:정말? 그렇게 오래 걸릴 줄 몰랐군요.
B:교대로 운전해요.
A:그거 정말 좋은 생각인데요.
B:제가 먼저 운전할게요.
*wheel:차의 운전대(=steering wheel).handle이 아님.
