275. Go down the drain

drain은 하수시설을 뜻합니다. 하수로 내려갔다는 표현은 계획됐거나 시행되던 일이 수포로 돌아갔다는 의미입니다.

A:I thought you were planning to spend your holidays in Thailand.
B:Well, our plan fell through.
A:Didn’t you save over thousand dollars for the trip?
B:I did, but Sean didn’t.
A:So you let Sean’s tardiness cause the grand plan to go down the drain?
B:I didn’t know what else to do.

A:연휴에 태국 여행한다고 계획하지 않았었니?
B:응. 우리 계획은 수포로 돌아갔어.
A:여행한다고 천 달러 이상 모았었잖아?
B:그랬지. 하지만 숀은 그렇지 못했어.
A:그래서 넌 숀의 게으름 때문에 그 멋진 계획을 수포로 만들 거야?
B:다른 방법이 없잖아.

The much hyped project proved a failure in the end.(요란스럽게 시작된 계획은 실패로 끝났다.)
After the latest stock crash, his plan to buy a new house ended in smoke.(최근 있었던 주식폭락으로 새 집을 구입하려는 계획이 수포로 돌아갔다.)
