처음 잘못을 범하거나 작은 실수를 한 사람에게 "이번엔 한번 봐주겠다. " 고 하는데 영어로는 "I'll let you off the hook this time." 이라고 한다.여기서 'off the hook' 은 관용어로 '곤란에서 벗어나' 라는 뜻이다.
가령 "I'll let you off the hook this time, but don't do it again." 하면 "이번엔 봐주겠지만 다시 그런 짓 하지 마세요. " 라는 뜻이고, "The mayor got off the hook concerning the bribery charges." 하면 "그 시장은 뇌물 수수 혐의의 위기를 벗어났다. " 는 뜻이다.
"I'll let you off the hook this time." 과 비슷한 표현에 "I'll let you go this time." "You're free to go this time." 등이 있다.
